A Copywriter Writes

A Tumblr Blog
DAN WATSON

Kiwi copywriter.

Illustrator on the side.

This blog is filled with stuff that simply comes to mind that's too long to tweet.

It's mostly my observations as I try to make it in the advertising industry. It keeps me writing and, hopefully, gets you reading.

The Admiration List Grows or, 22 More Illustrators To Look At

Way back, tens of ones of posts ago, I blogged about 22 illustrators that I thought were kick-ass and creeped on regularly.

Now, I’ve got 22 more illustrators to add to this orgy of drawing debauchery.

    1. SARA BLAKE

Sara was part of the line up for the We Can Create conference in Auckland earlier this year. I’m real gutted I missed out on that. She does amazing things with colour. If you were to mosey on over to her website, you’d see all the projects she’s completed, including her current work, 100 Girls.

    2. GAVIN MACKEY

This guy’s Deviant Art page caught me a while back. First, I love it when people draw cartoons to make them look real. Secondly, like, three months ago I was walking the streets on Kuala Lumpur with my mate, Michael, discussing in concerning detail what Pokemon could physically exist in this world. This is very intriguing for any fan.

    3. JOE FENTON

Joe’s work is gracefully crammed with detail. On his Behance profile, he shows his arduous process, which deserves nothing short of a bow or and least a high-five. His treatment of light is spectacular. He’s definitely one of those artists that you spend hours looking at every inch of his work, appreciating all the little intricacies within. His website is full of this stuff.

    4. ZACH JOHNSEN

I’ve featured this guy on my own Twitter page. He does black and white people with colour exploding from them. It’s not a lot to be said, but it says a lot. See it all on his website.

    5. JAMES JIRAT PATRADOON

This guy’s style comes from watching too many cartoons and reading too many comics. However, if those habits produce skills like this then there is no such thing as too much of either of those two. His website is a flurry of colour and sketchy detail.

    6. MIRIAM MOSHINSKY

Funky goth. Those are the words that come to me when I went through her website. There’s a range of different styles, too, so that’s cool. She does logos and wallpapers that can be downloaded from her website.

    7. ADEMILSON BATISTA DA SILVA

AKA Adhemas. He’s selling colours. I’m sold on pretty much everything he does. My favourite work of his was the Coke posters. I loved those when they came out. His website is a joyride.

    8. SHOHEI OTOMO

AKA Hakuchi. The detail in this guy’s work is great! There’s a smoothness to the finished product that makes you want to look over it for hours, as if you have nothing else to do. You kind of go ‘OMG’ and ‘WTF’ at the same time. Check out his website, it’s awesome.

    9. MANUEL REBOLLO

The thing I love most about this guy’s work is the incorporation of type in a lot of it. Incredible line work. He doesn’t use colour much, but when he does, it’s modest and cool. See it for yourself on his blog. Portfolio to the right.

    10. SAKIROO CHOI

This guy is wacky as hell. He’ll prove it with his Behance portfolio and his website.

    11. ALEX PARDEE

There are imaginative people. And then there’s visionaries. Then, there’s people who transcend all that and dig into the deep recesses of their minds and pull out by the handful all the thoughts that we don’t care (or are maybe too afraid) to think and spread it on a canvas. Alex is one of those people. He’s insane. See more on his blog.

    12. BARNABY WARD

This guy’s rather buzzy. The above is probably my most favourite piece. Pretty girls juxtaposed with something freaky and weird is prevalent throughout the gallery on his website. I’d print at least half that stuff on t-shirts and wear them around.

    13. TOMER HANUKA

Tomer is incredible. His subject matter is very imaginative. You could take the scenes he draws and write wee stories around them. I’m a little tempted myself… See if you get the same feeling on his website.

    14. JORDAN YOUNG

I worked with Jordan briefly at JWT in New Zealand before he was called to New York to live it up big at JWT NY. I had no idea at the time he liked to illustrate. I just figured he drew scamps really well. It wasn’t until he started his blog that it all came out. If you frequent Manhattan, you might’ve seen a poster done by him. Great guy.

    15. PHINEAS X. JONES

Phineas has a style that makes gig and theatre posters cool. Looking through his commissioned work, I’d totally have some of those framed. Going through his personal art on his website, it’s full of tentacled what-the-fuck-ness. But still amazing.

    16. PHIL MCANDREW

I’m pretty sure this guy illustrated some of my favourite, but since forgotten books of my childhood. I love how he does eyes, overdoing it on the shadow and making certain character look intense beyond measure. See if you recognise anything from his website.

    17. CHERIE

Cherie’s work reminds me of the illustration work I tend to see on flyers and posters for alternative club meetings and band performances in vegan coffee houses. The only reason I take those flyers is because I like how they look. I very rarely attend the kinds of functions they advertise. See her website here.

    18. MAX THOMPSON

Max is a friend of mine, who I met through some friends at university. I discovered his blog recently and I just thought he liked to draw and was very talented, but I never suspected he was in the business of it. I want to hire him to illustrate an ad one day.

    19. DAN HIPP

He’s got this sort of vintage thing going with his work. You can see it in some of his fake movie posters and such on his blog. It’s fun to look at.

    20. MICHAEL B. MYERS JR.

There’s a party mix of drawing styles on Michael’s website. My favourites are the character illustrations. He also does pixel art and uses a whole bunch of treatments. It’s hard to pin him down. It’s all cool, anyway. Take a look.

    21. RALPH STEADMAN

I grew up with this guy too. His drawings remind me of ol’ Phil McAndrew above. But I recognise Ralph for that classic typography of his. I read a picture book like, 15 years ago about a vampire who ran a school that I’m pretty sure he was involved with. Ah, nostalgia. His website is here.

    22. ALLEN SUTTON

Allen here is just as awesome as the rest. He likes the grotesque. I could say more, but I really just want to finish this post. Allen has a blog, a Behance profile and a Deviant Art page as well. He’s all over!

See the other 22 illustrators from before that I admire also.
